Clinical Fellowship SLPs Can Now Bill Medicare

CMS has reversed its prior interpretation, now allowing Clinical Fellowship SLPs with provisional licenses to bill Medicare Part B for outpatient speech language pathology services.

Clinical Fellowship SLPs Can Now Bill Medicare

Physical Therapy Now is excited to share a significant development for our Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) colleagues. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has updated its policy, now permitting Clinical Fellowship SLPs who hold provisional licenses to bill Medicare Part B for outpatient speech-language pathology services. This change offers vital support to emerging professionals as they complete their supervised fellowship year and begin providing essential care.

This regulatory adjustment signifies a crucial step in recognizing the valuable contributions of newly credentialed SLPs. By enabling direct billing, Medicare is facilitating greater access to specialized speech, language, and swallowing services for beneficiaries. This not only benefits the fellows by providing them with valuable billing experience but also expands the network of providers available to serve the community.

At Physical Therapy Now, we champion the growth and development of all allied health professionals. This new Medicare policy is a positive advancement that will undoubtedly empower a new generation of SLPs to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care across the country. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this will have on both practitioners and the individuals they serve.
